Plant Trials

Bennett and Brosseau Roofing, Inc. is truly committed to understanding the ecology of green roofs. Tried and proven plant lists for green roofs in the Chicagoland area are needed (Magill, 2011). The offices and headquarters of the company have three green roof systems. These green roofs include two shallow four-inch systems (extensive) and one deeper six-inch (semi-intensive) system. Each of these roofs has a different aspect, with two media depths, and media sourced from different manufacturers. Currently, 37 native plant species are being trialed, with room for many more in the future. The green roof market is still very young in Chicagoland compared with Europe, so the knowledge gained from plant trials is tremendously valuable. To further expand our understanding we have partnered with the academic community, the results of which are forthcoming.
